SWR 2015 Electric Replica Contestants

Richard Dick - Strato Streak; Bob Galler - American Ace; Colin Widdison - Comet Clipper MK II; Vic Newton - Playboy; Luther Peters - Quaker; Steve Moskal - Comet Sailplane; Phil Pearce - Simplex

The weather was in the mid-70's on the day we flew the Electric Replica event. Our new location near Eloy, AZ pretty much resembled the old location on Toltec Road. This one was a challenge to find but well worth the effort. The free flight guys north of the the RC field were very helpful in directing me and Mary to the new RC location. Mary Moskal took this group shot before the three rounds were flown. Vic Newton put in a 13+ minute max to stay soundly in the lead. We'd like to state here that Vic knows he has to do some "work" recovering his Playboy. It could be that, when he ever gets to it, it may make his performance suffer and give the rest of us a chance.

The results as reported by Bob Galler:

Vic Newton 1st
Steve Moskal 2nd
Richard Dick 3rd
Phil Pierce 4th
Bob Galler 5th
Luther Peters 6th
Colin Widdison  (Had some trim issues and did not post a time.)

We heard Loren Kramer is working on his own ER model and look forward to seeing it.

Terry Tombaugh's Miss America

Terry Tombaugh has been flying up a storm with his new Miss America. I asked him for some data on the model and he gave a very thorough description and some neat pics. Here's the description by Terry.

"3.86 lbs all-up weight without battery. So far I've used a 3S 3A and 3S 3.3A  battery. This adds 260-300 gms. of weight and keeps the CG at about 33-35% as specified on plans.  Later  I will try a 2650 or 2200 3S and move the CG back a little. It flies perfectly at 33-35% throttle so there's no rush to do this.  It uses a Turnigy 3548/5   900kv motor, Xoar 13 X 6 prop, 90 Amp ESC (more than necessary but it's what I had on hand.)  The graphics are made by Callie Graphics. I told her to duplicate the earlier order from Buzz for his Miss America. The plans (reproduced from the originals) from Bob Holman show that exact fuselage graphic and stripe. The heavier Du-Bro wheels put the CG 33-35% without adding nose weight. It glides very flat for that vintage of old timer. Not as responsive to light lift as my Playboy 80 (built by Buzz) but that weighs only 2 lbs. But it can fly extremely slowly without stall or loss of control authority.  Maintains altitude at one click below half throttle and climbs in a head wind at that setting .  I get 21-23 minutes duration on a 3S 3A  battery at that setting. All Ultracote, standard weight covering."

Doping (Lacquer!) The Sandy Hogan

Bob Galler writes:
"In my garage with door partially open and heater on from 1:30 till 3:00.  The temp was 55 in my garage. I was using nitrate donated by ASA club member Terry Pierce thinned 20% with Brodak nitrate thinner. Shrinks well. This is the last of any doping  needed for this baby. Worked almost to the point of asphyxiation. One wing half top view other bottom.

SAM 100 Fun Fly December 5

Bob Galler writes:

On Friday 12/5 the SAM 100 guys flew after a rare entire day of rain. We flew at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Field where we have a designated area for Old Timers and Gliders. Other areas in the park are designated for Helis, Jets ARFs and FF. We have our own gate cards from the city, of course we don't fly when soccer and other events are going on, so it is usually week days before noon. Also the entire month of September and October the park is closed for the Balloon Fiesta, so we fly elsewhere.  Friday we flew RC LER, Speed 400 and 36inch Replica.  Those attending were Vic Newton, Steve Moskal, Richard Dick, Bob Dubois, Terry Tombaugh, Rocky Stone and myself. It was great to see Steve out as he had a full knee replacement just a month ago. At one time Terry Tombaugh and myself ROG'd two full size Dallaire Sportsters in formation, and somehow after 10 minutes landed within 20 seconds of each other. Other planes flown:
Super Sniffer
Jr. Playboy
Lanzo Bomber 72"
Cabin Playboy
50% Miss America
52" Speed 400  Lanzo Airborne
36 " Replica Tomboy
Micro UMX Radian motor glider (Steve's easy therapy)
